Primer Lesson Materials
OBJECTIVES:
  • Teachers will explicitly acknowledge the problem of stress and anxiety, and they will commit to providing a solution through ASSET.
  • Students will understand the brain science of stress.
  • Students will “take stock” of their stress responses and stressors in order to understand their stress patterns.

PROTIP: Language in the ASSET curriculum provides a framework for teachers, administrators, and students to talk about stress and anxiety. Use language from this primer lesson as a way to support students. For example, students can use the hand motion of “flip- ping their lid” to non-verbally signal that they are stressed and need a moment to pause.

M1T4 Belly Breathing
Objective:

PROTIP: In facilitating a Mindfulness exercise, it’s important to use the language of “become aware of” or “notice” instead of “think about” because we do not want students to actively engage in or follow their thoughts. We want them to simply notice those thoughts, non-judgmentally, and return back to the breath.
